Post 484 History
The history of American Legion Post 484 in Hickory Corners, Michigan, begins with its charter, dated either February 10 or March 10, 1947. Initially, the meetings took place in a piano shop located in downtown Hickory Corners, adjacent to a barbershop on the corner. This site is currently where the fire station, which was smaller at the time, stands.
The exact date when the land was acquired, and the building erected remains unclear. By the late 1940s, around the time of or shortly after receiving its charter, the Legion had secured a plot of land and constructed a building with the help of a mortgage. Mr. Cadwallader, who is believed to have been the school superintendent before the consolidation with Richland to form Gull Lake Schools in the 1960s, generously paid off this mortgage.
Subsequent years saw further developments, with additions to the building being made in the 1960s and later to accommodate the hall. The original building was known for hosting fish fries and bingo nights. Following Roy’s passing, the Legion continued its bingo nights, with Marian taking up the role of the caller.
